College is widely understood as the standard and most effective way to begin one’s career, often leading to high-paying jobs and enabling a pleasant lifestyle. However, for some, the idea of attending a university isn’t all that glamorous. Fortunately, contrary to popular belief, various other outlets can set one up for a successful life and career.
One of the most well-known alternative routes is the military. Unfortunately, many individuals are wary of this path due to unrealistic or exaggerated expectations; however, the military offers a plethora of opportunities for all types of people, not just combat roles that require strenuous physical activity. The military entrance exam (ASVAB) categorizes people into fields in which they are best suited. Joining the military offers one lifelong perks such as healthcare coverage, a lifetime annuity, and life insurance.
For those seeking a high-paying and independent career, attending trade school is a perfect way to gain the skills needed to do so. Trade school offers training in a variety of fields, notably skilled trades including electrical, plumbing, and automotive technology. Michael Sena is the CTE and Career Hub coordinator at Arvada West, as well as a business owner himself. Sena remarks that the potential for success in trade businesses is high and “person-driven,” but “you have to be willing to work harder than everybody.”
A-West offers a variety of CTE programs that give students real-world skills for future careers. Students can also attend classes at Warren Tech, where they are trained in specific fields. Sena remarks, “I would highly encourage students to take those classes as their electives because in all those classes, they bring in guest speakers, they go on site visits, some of them actually put their students in internships and job shadows.”
Attending a CTE program allows students to gain career-oriented skills within the school day, saving time, energy, and money. CTE courses include electronics, education, culinary, business, and many more. Students can explore different fields of study and gain an understanding of what career they may want to pursue.
It is evident that college is not the end-all, be-all when it comes to success; there are countless alternatives, which is reassuring to the many students who are not in love with the idea of spending thousands on a university tuition.
