Varsity boys soccer team finishes 2021 season with Senior Night

Last Tuesday, October 19th, the Arvada West varsity boys soccer team played their last game of the season. It was a showdown with Columbine High School’s Varsity boys soccer team. The Seniors were recognized for their achievement of being a part of the team. Each Senior walked with family members or close people in their lives as they were recognized.

Midfielder and senior John Keleman describes that moment, “It made me feel accomplished because it’s giving people recognition for all their hard work, practices, and games over the past years.”

Not only was this the senior night game but it was important because this game determined if they would go to the state championship.

“I was nervous and excited,” center midfielder and senior Brody Henzie details.

The game was eventful and left the audience on their toes with a 0-0 score both halves of the game. As the game went into overtime the stakes were high. With 10 minutes on the clock and A-West in possession of the ball it, was a fight to get the first goal.

Columbine scored with 4 minutes remaining on the clock for overtime. This marked the end of the 2021 soccer season and for some Seniors, their last game playing for A-West. Emotions ran high throughout the team as this sunk in.

“It was pretty sad having that be the last moment of A-West Soccer,” outside defender and senior Owen Welch recalls, “I learned that sometimes you just need to have fun because having fun is the main goal and it’s not about winning.”

Despite having a loss for their last game the Varsity Boys Soccer team maintained a 6-6-3 record for this season. Meaning that they had 6 wins, 6 loses, and 3 ties.

For the future of the seniors who are continuing on next year, a few still have opportunities in the Winter and Spring to play together on a club team.

“Even though it was the last game of the season it was a good team bonding moment.”Keleman expresses.
